Quantum mechanics is one of the main pillars of modern physics, yet eighty years after its birth it is still difficult to make a good sense of the picture it portrays of the physical reality. The standard way of interpreting the mathematical formalism of quantum mechanics and other alternative interpretations of it are riddled with various difficulties. In the course, we shall explore the conceptual foundations of quantum mechanics, the differences between the classical and the quantum pictures of the physical reality, and the difficulties in reconciling quantum mechanics with relativity theory.
