The early-modern rejection of pseudo-explanatory quiddities had a tendency to target postulated mechanisms as well. There remained the Problem and Induction: why does the observation of a regularity up to now make its continuation henceforth a good bet? A power in things? An underlying causal mechanism? Both answers invite in turn the question why. Or can we see “powers” as place-holders for mechanisms?
