The Institute congratulates Jan on being awarded the 2019 Joan Cahalin Robinson Prize from the Society for the History of Technology (SHOT) for his paper, “Opening the Red Box: The Fire Alarm Telegraph and Technologies of Emergency Response.” The Prize is awarded annually for the best-presented paper by a scholar of any age delivering his or her first paper at the SHOT annual meeting. In his paper, Jan argues that the fire alarm telegraph in Frankfurt materialized the interests of property owners and Prussian police. Jan invites students and researchers interested in the social, cultural, and political dimension of risk management to contact him.
